Rodzaj został opisany przez Bernharda Auerswalda z Karla Wilhelma Gottlieba Leopolda Fuckela w Arch. Vereins Freunde Naturgesch. Mecklenburg tom 13 na stronie 177 w 1859 r. (literatura wtórna).

Nazwa rodzaju Wuestneia jest na cześć Karla Georga Gustava Wüstnei (1810-1858), który był niemieckim nauczycielem, a także botanikiem i entomologiem . Uczył matematyki i nauk przyrodniczych w szkołach w Schwerinie w Niemczech.
