Lista ponumerowanych komet
To jest lista komet okresowych , które zostały ponumerowane przez Minor Planet Center po co najmniej dwóch obserwacjach. Ich okresy orbitalne wahają się od 3,2 do 366 lat. Według stanu na listopad 2021 r. Istnieje 436 ponumerowanych komet (1P – 436P), z których większość należy do rodziny Jowisza (JFC). Istnieje również 31 komet typu Encke (ETC), 14 komet typu Halleya (HTC), pięć komet typu Chiron (CTC) i jedna kometa długookresowa ( 153P ). Około jedna trzecia tych ciał to także komety bliskie Ziemi (NEC). Ponadto osiem ponumerowanych komet jest zasadniczo klasyfikowanych jako mniejsze planety – pięć komet pasa głównego , dwa centaury (CEN) i jedna asteroida Apollo – i wykazują cechy zarówno asteroidy, jak i komety.
Czasami komety rozpadają się na wiele kawałków , ponieważ substancje lotne wydobywające się z komety i siły rotacyjne mogą spowodować jej rozpad na dwie lub więcej części. Ekstremalnym tego przykładem jest 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann , który rozpadł się na ponad 50 części podczas peryhelium w 1995 roku .
Większą listę okresowych komet z rodziny Jowisza i typu Halleya, w tym nienumerowanych ciał, można znaleźć na liście komet okresowych .
